MINING
The wash-up on the Molyneux Electric dredge yesterday, after a run of only GO hours, resulting in a return of 470 z, nearly all lino gold. During the last shift worked prospects ot three and four grains a shovelful could bo obtained from the wash brought up by the buckets. The river has fallen about 4in, and, provided tho weather does not break and more rain set m, it is probable that it may lower sufficiently to enable dredging operations to be recommenced at an early date. The crew is engaged in the meantime on the work of repairing the buckets. The conditions under which the company can carry on are seriously hampered by the operations of the Karawau Company, ior the reason that the lowering of the nycr level following on the closing of the dam gates was of no advantage, as the river, two months before the gates were closed, had already fallen to a favorable dredging level. The reopening of the gates liberated a large volume of stored-up water which, had the gales not been closed at all, would have flowed away naturally, while the rht.T remained at its winter level. D was unfortunate that, just as as the dredge had reached and commenced to open out a very rich wash, a cessation of operations was brought about by the opening of the gates.
