800 IN OREGON CASES
(Special io the ’ Spad.’]
CHRISTCHURCH, August 18. A Christchurch timber merchant on examining a .shipment ol- Oregon doors imported from America, and landed yesterday, louml the eases riddled with borer. terviewed to-day, the; merchant stated that this was the _ first occasion on which Ids iirm had noticed the borer in imported, timber. An inspection ol tins cases revealed the unmistakable work of this dangerous pest. Every case was riddled with borer holes about the size ol' a threepenny hit. Although t. doors were untouched, tho manager stated that it would only ho a mattci of time before the soft 'Oregon timber would be affected. As tho American Oregon is slightly cheaper t). n the New Zealand red pine, there was a, keen demand by the public for the imported timber.
A Christchurch {milder who was present stated that at the request of a man for whom he was building a house lm bad used a good deal of American Oregon. After a. few years the wood been mo riddled with borer.
“ A most disquieting feature is the danger of this borer getting into tho standing forests in Now Zealand, and ], think it only right that the_ public should awaken to the danger of using this imported timber, and that action bo taken to have it excluded from New Zealand,” stated tho merchant.
