AMERICA TO NEW ZEALAND INITIAL DIFFICULTIES Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. NEW YORK, August 17. (Received August 18, at 9.45 a.m.) After two false starts Captain Giles planned a further attempt to-day to achieve the first leg of the flight to New Zealand, his first objective being the Oakland airport, California. He made two attempts yesterday, hut ho had to return each time owing to imperfect functioning by Ids motors. Captain Giles got away to a perfect start, despite a load of 5,1301 b, but ho tore away a tyre of his under-carriage when lauding; therefore he decided to wait until to-day, when he proposes to fly direct to Chicago, and then lo follow the western air mail lights to the Pacific coast.
