THE RACE BEGINS
FLIGHT TO HONOLULU FIVE PLANES START TWO FAIL TO KISH.Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, SAX FRANCISCO, August IC. (Received August 17, at 11.10 a.m.) Five planes hopped off from Oakland at noon to-day for the Dole race tn Honolulu before a cheering crowd of 200,000 spectators.
Griffin and Hen Icy in the monoplane Oklahoma were the first away. Griffin started his heavily-loaded plane- down a runaway promptly at 12 o’clock. Soon the machine soared into the air.
Goddard was the next, moving down the runaway two minutes later, piloting the Elcncanto, but was unable to leave the ground. He rocked from side to side down the course, then tho left wing snapped in the middle. Neither Goddard nor the navigator, Hawkins, was hurt. Tho plane was too heavily loaded to rise.
Irving took off in the Pabco flier at four minutes past 12, but stopped one minute later, being also unable to leave tho ground. Irving declared that the plane got away too quickly. Ho aniiouneed that he would try again as soon as possible after tho others had departed.
Charles Barkliurst, whose plane, the Air King, was disqualified shortly before the take-off, announced that, following tho failure of the two planes to rise, the committee was absolutely right in barring .him.
Frost, in the Golden Eagle, took off successfully at 12.30, being followed half a minute later hy Poddlar and Miss Mildred Doran in the plane Miss Doran.
Ninety seconds later Jensen followed in the Aloha, then Goebel took the runaway a minute afterwards in tho Woolaroo, while Erwin, in the Dallas Spirit, departed at 12.3 G.
