SIR L, BARRETT’S GIFT
£I,OOO FOR PLAYING FIELD The following letter was read at xbo Otago University Council’s meeting jW terclay Hampden, North Otago, August 7. The Registrar University of Otago. Dear sir,—l have for a long time cherished the desire to make a contribution of £I,OOO to the fund for the formation of a playing field at Logan Park that will bo worthy of the University and a benefit to the present and succeeding generations of my fellow students. 1 have pleasure, therefore, in now; forwarding us a first instalment the sum of £250 for that object. In view- of the present unemployment distress I thought it better to send this instalment now rather than wait until 1 was in a position to forward the lull amount. The needs of our University arc many and pressing, but I hope that first one and then another may bo provided for, with the help of those who, like myself, are gratefully impressed with its splendid record of service to tho community. With my best wishes for the welfare and progress of the Otago University, for the establishment of more residential hostels, and generally for more liberal financial support, i am, dear sir, yours faithfully, L. E. Barxktx. The Vice-Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell) said that Sir Louis Barnett’s gift was enhanced in tlic eyes of tho council hy the generous and feeling terms of his letter. It showed a shining example to other old students of the Otago University. He moved that tho warmest thanks of the council be tendered to Sir Louis for bis generous gift and for bis continued interest in the University.
Mr Gil'ray seconded the .motion, and it was carried.
