UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO

MEETING OF COUNCIL Present at the monthly meeting yesterday afternoon: —The Vice-chancellor (Mr Morrell), Ur Inglls, Professor Benham, Dr Alarshall Macdonald, Dr Fitzgerald, Messrs Scnrr, Thomson, Douglas, Gilray, Stephens, G. R. Ritchie, Aloore, Wallace, and L. Deans Ritchie. W.E.A. Tho Secretary of the Workers’ Educational Association recommended to council to accept tho resignations of Dr Holloway and Air Watson as tutors for the current year, and to appoint for the balance of the term to the positions Miss Fyfe and Air Bates at the same salaries.—Recommendations approved. STU'DENT DEMONSTRATORS. The -sub-dean of the medical faculty forwarded a letter from Dr Carmalt Jones regarding the necessity for student demonstrators. Dr Fitzgerald gave reasons for making such appointments. It was considered that the classes could he conducted better if turned into groups. Referred to the Aledical and Finance Committees, with power to act. MAC A NDltr iV SCHOLARSHIP. The Professorial Board recommended that the value of tho Alaeandrew scholarship bo increased to £75 per annum. Funds for this were in hand. The scholarship now stood at £35. _ On the motion of Dr Inglis the recommendation was adopted. BURSARIES. The Director of Education declined payment of certain claims for University bursaries.—The Vice-chancellor explained that tho department had all tho information regarding the bursaries.—The matter was referred the tho special committee appointed to meet the Director. GENERAL.

Airs G. S. Sale wrote offering a portrait of Professor Sale to be hung in the new wing of the Aluscum. —Accepted with thanks. A letter was read fmm the Director of Education to tho effect that more than ten Home Science bursaries would he awarded next year.—Noted.

Tho acting-deau of the medical faculty forwarded arrangements proposed by Dr Carmalt-Joncs for carrying on his work during his absence ii> tho autumn term of 1927.—Referred to Aledical Committee, with power to act unless additional finance is involved. Professor Strong recommended that Nur.sc Kilpatrick he appointed to teach tho home nursing class on the same terms as last year.—Agreed to.

FINANCE AND HOME SCIENCE. The Finance and Home Science Committees jointly reported that they had considered a letter from the dean of the Home Science Faculty, recommending that the diploma students pay £2 12s fid for anatomy in the spring term, and the degree students £1 ILs fid. The dean suggested that the situation be reviewed before next year. The first recommendation was agreed to, and the second referred to the Home Science Faculty for report. Report adopted. FINANCE AND MEDICAL.

The Finance and Aledical Committees reported thus;— As to request from the dean of the medical faculty regarding appointment of student demonstrators fur tho winter term, it was resolved to approve of the following appointments:— Pathology, Do Clive Lowe and Alerccr, at £5 each; bacteriology, Chisholm and Hindeiiacb, at £5 each; pharmacy, Brett, £lO. With regard to U lO requested appointment of Alessrs Dc Clive Lowe and Alackay as student demonstrators in medicine it was resolved that tho chairman and the faculty bo asked to report as to the necessity for these appointments. Dr R. V. Shaw wrote resigning from the end of August. Dr Hercus wrote recommending that Dr. Duncan Cook be appointed in his place till the end of tho year. It was resolved to recommend that Dr Shaw’s resignation he accepted, and that Dr Horcus’s recommendation be agreed to subject to the salary of Dr Cook being the same as that of the assistant in pathology—viz., £250 per annum. The acting-dean of the medical faculty wrote stating it was impossible with tho existing staff to make arrangements for the librarian’s work. It was resolved that a sub-commitlec consisting of the chairman, Dr Fitzgerald, and Dr Alacdonald confer with tho medical faculty with regard to the matter.. Report adopted. WORKS.

The Works Committee reported thus as to communications from the architect :

lie forwarded final statement concerning Aledical School contract, showing a credit of £531 5s 2d, inclusive of £167 Is for amount received for clay. The committee resolved that the architect be congratulated sincerely on this result.

He forwarded tenders lor electrically controlled locks lor Medical School lift. It was resolved to accept tender of the National Electrical Company, £73, for this work. Ho stated that the account from the City Corporation. £27 8s JOd, for installation of nas at the Dental School was not payable by the council, but by Messrs A. and T. Burt. The committee considered that this was a matter between the City Corporation and A. and T. Burt, and that the council he recommended to accept no liability iu the matter.

He forwarded tender from Messrs J. and W. Faulkner, £4, for putting in idler bars in lift at Dental School. The price was accepted. He stated that the repairs at Dr Jack’s house had been commenced, and that the contractor had been requested to discontinue the work. It was resolved that tho work stand over till it was decided what was to be done with the house.

Ho forwarded lenders Irom Messrs J. and W. Faulkner for idler bars iu lift at the Medical School. It was resolved to accept the price of £7 16s for idler bars in the lift itself, but to hold over the price of £4O 8s Cd for idler bars in the grilles on the various landings. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported having considered a letter Irora Professor Jack stating that lie wished to terminate the tenancy of his house at the end of August. Professor Strong wrote asking that the house be used for the accommodation of home science students. It was resolved that Dr Jack’s letter bo submitted to the council for its consideration, and that the Home Science Committee bo asked to renort to the council on Professor Strong’s request, the council to submit it if it thinks desirable to the Finance Committee. The committee considered a letter from the Education Department stating that a grant of £3,000 had been mad© subject to an allocation of 50 per cent, of endowment income to the special schools. It was resolved that the Chancellor be asked to make certain inquiries—e.g., what special schools are referred to and what is exact lv meant by endowment income. The committee considered the treasurer’s annual report. It was resolved to recommend that a committee of the council be set up to report as to possible economies and reduction of expenditure, tbe committee to consist of the Vice-chancellor, Messrs L. D. Ritchie. 6. R. Ritchie, O. M. Gilray. Dr Fitzgerald, Mr J. C. Stephens, and Mr J Wallace. The following requisitions were approved : —Dr Elder, £2. - for lantern slides; Mr Skinner. £6 ss, sundrjequipment; Dr l.nglis. £l4O. 10s 3d, equipment for new building, subject to allocation of grant. Report adopted.
