MANCHESTER UNITY

There was a big muster at the fortnightly meeting of Loyal Dalton, the oceasion being an official visit from Loyal Pride of Kaitangata and Queen of Otago Lodges, both of which were well repiesentcd, the delegation from the ladies’ lodge numbering thirty. The N.G., Pro, James Craig, presided, and extended a hearty welcome to the visitors. An invitation was received from the Kaitangata Lodge to the latter’s annual ball on August 18. Two new members were initiated into the order, the officers carrying out the initiation ceremony very impressively. P.P.G.M. Mijdlemass reported that the District Executive had granted permission to form a Past Grands’ Lodge in South Otago, and solicited the support of Dalton Lodge at a meeting to bo held at Kaitangata on the 17Lh inst. It was decided to send live delegates to the meeting. Alter the ordinary meeting, P.P.G.M. Bro. Middleniass delivered the second and third degree lectures to a largo number of brethren, his impressive rendering of the lectures being much appreciated. The lodge then went into harmany, a pleasant time being spent in dancing, etc. Bro. Molfatt acted as M.C. The music was supplied by Bro. T. Gibson. Sisters Ratclift'o and Kennedy gave very acceptable vocal items. During an interval opportunity was taken to present to P.G. Bro. Lane a framed emblematical certificate in recognition of his services to the lodge. Bro. Middleniass pointed out that Bro. Lane was a recruit from the Loyal Pioneer Juvenile Lodge, in which ho had gone through'the various chairs before taking office in the senior lodge. Bro. Lane suitably replied. The N.G., Bro. Borkeushaw, was in the chair at the ordinary meeting of Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge. There was a good attendance of members, including visitors from Loyal Valley and Centenary, who responded to the second toast. Two candidates were initiated into the mysteries of Oddfellowship. it was decided to present a Past Grand’s rosette to P.G. Bro. Austin, who recently completed his second term of office in the lodge. Business having been transacted, the lodge went into harmony. The card match, Married v. Single was played, the latter winning. Loyal Queen of Otago- meeting attracted a good attendance, Sister Noil in the chair. The N.G. and Sister Gilmonr reported on visits to Kaitangata and Dalton. At the latter lodge a degree meeting was held, a large number of brethren taking their degrees. The Ball Committee reported that arrangements for this function on August 19 were now completed. A bazaar is shortly to be held by Queen of Otago members, and reports were received from the committee set up to organise this. During the evening one candidate was initiated, and one proposal received for membership. After the meeting a most successful social was held. Loyal Valley met in the hall, Albany street, Die N.G.. Bro. Mosley, in the chair. The Prov. G.M.. Bro. Stabb, and P.P.G.M., Bro. Clarke were present, representing the executive, and wore received with the customary toast. The P.G.M. commented on the presence of a goodly number of Past Grands at the meetings of the various lodges, which he was pleased to note found no exception in the Valley Lodge. He also referred to tlie culmination of the deliberations of the Juvenile Committee set up at Cromwell, and said that a juvenile council, working as a separate unit, would probably he set up as an outcome of their report. It was resolved to invite the ladies of the Princess Mary Lodge to a special evening on September 17 next, the night being the celebration of the forty-fourth anniversary of the lodge. The Past Grands are to take the various chairs. The visitors’ toast was responded to by Centenary and Hand and Heart. A team from Centenary was present, and defeated Valley in a card shield match. At the usual meeting of Royal Princess Mary there was a good muster of officers and members. A number of visitors were present, including representatives from Christchurch, Dunedin, Hand and Heart, Albion, Cavcrshain, and Prince of Wales. An initiation ceremony was held, four candidates being received into the lodge. Arrangements were made to pay an official visit to Loyal Dunedin Lodge. The meeting dosed early to enable a dance to be hold. Parents’ night at the Loyal Caversham Juvenile Lodge drew a largo attendance of members and adults. After an initiation ceremony, during which two new members were admitted, a,very enjoyable programme was submitted by Bro. Freeman’s concert party. The following were the items:—Accordion solo, Mr C. Freeman; fancy dance, Miss Lunam; recitation, Miss! G. Murray; waltz clog, Miss L. Hayden; songs, Miss M’Cnrdy, Miss Lunam, Mr Montague, and Mir G. Wiseman; duet, Sisttrs Riddell and Robertson; humorous sketches, Messrs Wiseman and Freeman; Highland dance. Miss Hayden. Mrs Sligo and Miss Gilliand were efficient accompanists. Supper terminated an enjoyable evening. Prince of Wales Juveniles met at Port Chalmers, a fair attendance greeting the N.G., Bro. Brown. Apologies were received from the P.D.G.M., Bro. Johnson, and P.G., Campbell. A cordial welcome was extended to Bro. Williamson on his appearance in the lodge after an illness. A challenge from the Foresters’ Juveniles to a game of football was accepted, and a committee was appointed to manage the teams. Business having been dealt with, the hoys spent an hour in harmony, boxing again being the most popular item. The Management Committee has undertaken to entertain the boys at the nest meeting. The official visit from sister lodges drew a very large attendance to the Loyal Dunedin Lodge meeting on Thursday evening, the N.G., Bro. Hastio. presiding over some KiO. The city lodges were present in force, and a large number of the brethren of the

Loyal Mosgiel Lodge also attended. The District Executive was represented by the P.G.M., Bro. Stabb, P.P.G.M. Pro. Clarke, and P.P.G. Bro. Sligo, while apologies were received from the D.P.G’.M., Bro. Johnson, and the Prov. Secretary, Bro. Hopcraft. The P.G.M. expressed his pleasure at seeing such a largo and representative gathering of Oddfellows, especially congratulating Princess Victoria (Milton) and Mosgiel. Sympathy was expressed with P.G. Bro. Scooncs, a very old member of the .Dunedin Lodge, in his illnes, and best wishes wee extended for his early recovery. After the ordinary meeting, during which one candidate was initiated and two more proposed for membership, a very acceptable musical programme was submitted by the following members: —Piano solos, Sisters Robertson and Riddell; recitations, Bro. Russell; sßngs, Sister Robinson. Sister Riddell acted as accompanist. The second toast was responded to by the visiting members, after which supper was served, bringing an enjoyable meeting to a close.
