“ THANKS FOR THE MOTOR RIDE M In the I’ollcc Court this morning Percy Edward Wliittall pleaded guilty 10 having obtained credit by iraud, to jibe extent of i'2 from James Bayley. Ciiicf-dctoetive Cameron said that the accused became involved iu Oanuiru in negotiations for the purchase of a car, and gave a valueless cheque in the, process, but the car was not delivered. Ho was, however, driven about "a lot, and was brought (to Dunedin in the ear which he made out that lie contemplated purchasing. 11 was on the question of costs incurred in connection with this drive it hat the present charge was laid. 110 might have been charged with false pretences. but the police in the northern district decided not to proceed. Accused said he was intoxicated at :ihe time of the offence, though ho was not reallv a drinker Occasionally, when his nerves went hack upon him, he took a few whiskies and Ihen lost control of himself. For a year or two veers, perhaps, he would not touch drink. . . . The Chicf-dctcctivc said impuriei in Uamaru had failed to bring evidence fihat accused was drunk at fho ime, or showed any signs of liquet. _ Accused; 'll'iat is the strange tiling. I am more sober-looking when drunk (firm I am when sober. 1 cannot understand it myself. . , - The Magistrate (air Bartholomew) said he would give accused a chanea on this condition. Ho would he conlifted and ordered to come up tor sentenee it caller] upon within tweUc months. There did not seem to hr any necessity for accused to he prohibited.
