VIGOROUS BATTING

LONDON, August II

(Received August 12, at 11 a.m.)

The wicket had completely recovered to-day, and enabled the New Zealanders to give another display of vigorous batting before an attendance of 2,500 in the match against Gloucestershire. By lunch 135 had been added to the total.

NEW ZEALAND. First Innings.

Pago was badly missed by Parker off his own howling at 20, and then went on to score 50. His partnership with Mills for the fourth wicket produced 121 in 85miu. The latter, who reached BG, was in nearly three hours, and onlv hit seven boundaries.

Lowry’s play was a striking contrast to tho Aucklander’s. Ho only took 85min to reach the century, and hit fifteen 4’s, including four in one over from Goddard, Parker, the only bowler ■who could keep him at all quiet, sent down lifteen maiden overs out of fortyeight overs. After Mills loft Lowry did not meet with any support, except from M'Girr, and as soon as he had attained his century ho declared tho innings closed with nine wickets down for 415.

Going in again, Dipper and Sinlicld made a much better start for tho county. They batted stubbornly in an effort to save tho game, and took an hour and a-half to get 75. Blunt then broke up the partnership, and also quickly got Sinfleld with a clinking ball. Dipper was in altogether for l-loiiiiii before reaching 50, and was
