BEAUTIFUL WAIPORI
As was anticipated, the numbers of visitors to Waipori during the past suinmer did not compare with those iu the Exliibition days, but there was a fegular bus service, and on week-ends and holidays good crowds were shown through the P9wor station, the greater percentage this year being from the city and suburbs (states the annual report of the city electrical engineer, Mr M. C. Henderson). The river road has been maintained in excellent condition, and is being improved all the time by widening the corners. There is abundance of good gravel, which can be carted for the bottom end, but there is none convenient to the first five miles from the power station. It was therefore decided to obtain a portable crusher and tractor that could bo set up at ronvnient spots .along the road where suitable rock was obtainable. This was in continuous use for nearly five months, and all the roads about the settlement were metalled, in addition to about a, mile of the main road. This has improved the conditions to a marked degree, and it is hoped to complete another section in the spring'. The Government vested the control of the whole of the Waipori Bush reserve of approximately 4,00 Q acres iu the Dunedin City Council for a term of three years, and every precaution is being taken to prevent damage by fire, and so preserve for all time one of the finest drives iu the vicinity of Dunedin. The Acclimatisation Society lias also been very active in stocking both river and dam with trout, with excellent results, which will increase as the years pass.
