Bates) supplied tho following at noon to-day:—The indications are for variable and strong breezes, westerly moderate to strong prevailing, and backing by W. to S., tho weather will probably' prove squally and changeable, neavy rain probable, and snow on high country, the weather will probably become colder: tile barometer has a falling tendency, but rising after about sixteen hours; seas considerable, tides good. SAlLED.—August 10. Cambridge, s.s. (2.5 p.m.), 10,850 tens, R. Williams, for Lyttelton. Kamo, s.s. (5.30 p.m.), 1,236 tons, Whitcford, for Bluff. ARRIVED.—August 11. Storm, s.s. (5.30 a.m.), 749 tons, Munson, from Wanganui via ports. Holmdale, s.s. (9 a.m.). 681 tons, Williams, from Wanganui via ports. The Storm arrived this morning from Wellington, and unless the weather clears will not get away until to-mor-row morning for Timaru. Lyttelton, Wellington, and Wanganui. Tho Kamo sailed last night for Hlnll. She should return hero to-morrow lor Napier and Gisborne via ports. , , T'!*3 Holmdale arrived, this morning from Wanganui via portt, and will probably sail to-night for Wellington, Eicton, and Wanganui via ports. Tho Cambridge left Port Chalmers yesterday afternoon for Lyttelton, where she will continue loading for Now York. Boston, London, and West of England ports. The Kamo left Auckland hist night for Lyttelton and Dunedin. She is due here on Tuesday to load for Auckland via ports. s The Corinna has been delayed at. New Plymouth on account of bad weather, and was to leave there to-day for Wellington and Dunedin. She is duo here on Sunday to load on Monday for Nelson and'New Plymouth via ports. Cabled advice lias been received that the Corinthic, which sailed from Wellington on Juno 30 for Southampton and' London via Panama, arrived at Southampton on Sunday, On completion of her overhaul and survey at Auckland, the Union Uompany intends to despatch tho steamer Kaiwarra from there next Monday tor Onerahi, wjjcre she will load timber for Sydney and Newcastle. When loaded with a full load of sand and shingle, the barge Ranger sprang a serious leak when berthed at Winstone’s wharf (Auckland) on Monday morning.' As she was in danger of capsizing the barge was sunk on an even keel. Later she was raised, and found to he little damaged. Tho Federal Lino steamer_ Cumberland, which sailed from on July 12 for London and West of Engla ml ports, is reported to have passed through the Panama Canal on August 3.
The R.M.S. Tahiti, from Wellington, arrived at San Francisco at 5 a.in. on Friday last. Tho vessel was to leave tile, Californian port yesterday lor Papeete, Rarotonga, Wellington, and Sydney. TilF FERRY SERVICE, The W’ahine. from Wellington, arrived at Lyttelton at 6.5 U a.m; this morning, and passengers ami mails connected with the 8.50 express. PAKEHA FROM. LONDON. An arrival at Auckland at the end of this month will he the Shaw, Snvill, and Alhipn steamer I’akcha. from London. She has general merchandise for discharge, at Auckland. Wellington, and Napier, and is scheduled to -arrive on August 30. THE MANUKA. The Manuka, advises the Uiun Company, arrived at Wellington at 4.30 p.m. yesterday from Melbourne. She will now sail" from there to-morrow for Lyttelton and Dunedin, being due hero on Sunday. The vessel should sail on Monday for Bluff and Melbourne. THE KARKTU.“ ’ The Tvaretu arrived this morning from Newcastle and Sydney via Lyttelton. with transhipments ex the Elhorfcld, Tasman. 'Tango Maru, Milnra, Touraine, Mooltnn. St. Albans, Esperance Bay, Marella, City of Sparta, Comorin, Freiburg, and Burma Maru. She also has* a quantity ol fruit. _ It is expected that the Karetu will get away again on Saturday tor Oamaru, Bluff, and Melbourne. FROM PACIFIC COAST. Messrs Turnbull. THE PORT HUNTER. Messrs J. W. Swift and Co. advise that the Port Hunter is duo here about August 20 from Glasgow and Liverpool via northern ports. She left Auckland on Tuesday to complete discharging her general cargo in the south. THE KIA OEA. ’ With general merchandise from West Coast ports of Great Britain, the Shaw, Savill, and Albion steamer Km Ora is to leave Liverpool on August SJO for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She is due at Auckland on September 23. . .. THE PORT CAROLINE. The Commonwealth and Dominion Line steamer Port Caroline, which is due at Lyttelton from London next Saturday, will also discharge at Port Chalmers, Bluff, and Titnaru. Afterwards the vessel will! load for England at Bluff, Timaru, Wanganui, New'Plymouth, Auckland, and Wellington. She is scheduled to reach Auckland on Septtmhr 14 and to leave Wellington for London on September 25, The Farmers’ Co-operativo Auctioneering Jlompany are the local agents. 1 CARGO FROM LONDON. The Commonwealth and Dominion Line’s new motor ship Port Gisborne, on her maiden voyage, is tp leave'London on August 17 for Suva, ■ Wellington, Lyttelton, and Nelson. Tlio Port, Hardy is to leave London on September 28 (or Auckland and Wellington, and the motor ship Port Dunedin on November 30 for New Zealand ports not announced. MIDDLESEX LEAVES HOME. It is reported that the Middlesex sailed from London on August 7 for Wellington and Auckland via. the Panama Canal. She is due at Wellington on September 12, and at Auckland a week later.
NEW STEAMER ANGLO-AUS-TRALIAN. It is announced that the steamer Anglo-Anstralian lias been chartered to load coal at Cardiff for Adelaide. She is a new vessel, and tho trip to Australia will be her maiden voyage The vessel is owned by the Latta Lino, which also has the Anglo-Chilian, An-glo-Colouibiah, Anglo-Egyptian, AngipIndian, and Anglo-Pcrnvian, most of which have visited Australia. The Anglo-Australian attained an average speed of 12 knots in the course of her official sea trials. Built to the order of Lawther, Latta, and Company, Limited, by Short _ Bros., Limited, Sunderland, she is 4261 c in length between perpendiculars, 58ft in extreme breadth, and 0614 Gin in moulded depth from the shelter deck. The construction is on the shel-ter-dock principle, and the deadweight capacity is 10,000 tons on a moderate draught. There are six large hatches, and the holds and ’tween decks have wide-spaced pillars. Steel shifting boards have been fitted between tho hatches in the lower holds, wood shitting boards in the hatchways in the hold, and shifting boards and trunk feeders in the shelter deck. Eight derricks are stepped on houses at tho masts and swung from crosstrccs above, and, in addition, there are four derricks swung from powerful Samson posts. Twelve powerful steam winches, a steam windlass, steam steering gear, and a steam atmospheric ash hoist are installed. The midships accommodation is steam heated, and the electric light installation includes cargo clusters at all the hatches. The propelling machinery has been installed by tht North Eastern Marine Engineering Companv, Limited, Wall.send-on-.Tyno, and consists of qnadmple expansion engines with cylinders ‘iOJin, ‘l2l in, 47in, and 68in in diameter by 48in stroke. The steam is generated in three large mnifiiubuhir boilers oof 2201 b pressure. Superheat is fitted, and also Hondcns forced draught.
