HEIFETZ RECITAL
GENIUS AND ART Jascha Heifetz, the . world-renowned violinist-, is coming to Dunedin, not the youth of six years ago, when lie was able only to visit the North Island, hut a young man who has developed considerably, physically and mentally. What is delightfully to his credit is his modesty and entire absence of anything approaching affectation. At a reception for him, given by the New South Wales Musical Association, in response to the many laudatory expressions made on his behalf, lie replied: “Ladies and gentlemen, yon praise me overmuch, and 1 trust that you will be of the same mind after my concerts.” And so it proved. Nothing too great had been said of Heifetz, for a Sydney critic wrote: “Well, it may be said, now, after his first concert at the Town Hall _ last night that all that had been written and said in the favor of Heifetz was hut scant measure of praise of this great artist, his genius adn his art. All expectations as to his extraordinary technical powers were realised, and with them there is a mature conceptive instinct that is rave with one in the early twenties. The warmest of greetings was accorded the artist when he came upon the platform to open with Tomaso Vitali’s \ Chaconne,’ and in this piece the violinist demonstrated the fact that he knew not the word ‘difficult.’ It was glorious, and Heifetz’s playing was that of a master.” The box plans For preferential bookings are now open, and plans for ordinary bookings will open on Monday morning.
