BARGE SINKS IN HARBOR

CREW SAFELY TAKEN OFF [Pkk United Press Association.} AUCKLAND. July 25. A barge heavily laden with machinery used in mixing concrete for the construction of _ the new wharf at Dcvonport capsized and sank shortly before 1 o’clock this afternoon. The barge wae discovered to be leaking early in the day, and heavy seas, together with the driving wind and the heavy machinerv on board, rendered its condition unsafe. The Harbor Board authorities decided to remove the barge to a more sheltered anchorage, but directly the painter was cut the mishap occurred. The men on the deck of the barge were hastily transhipped to the tug, and fortunately no one was injured, although one man was compelled to dive into the water, and was subsequently rescued. No arrangements have yet been made for refloating the barge, and in the meanwhile construction work on the new wharf will be temporarily held np- ,
