ORPHANS’ GLUB
The- fortnight! v meeting of tho Orphans’ Club, held last night, was pro sided over by Bro. Allan Young. Thera was a largo attendance of members, and an enjoyable evening was spent, in addition to .carrying out tire ordi nary duties of chairman, Bro Young related a few humorous stories, and also announced that arrangements had been completed for tho annual ladies’ night on August 10. Two new members received their badges at the hands ol the president fßro. H. Turner), and Bro. T. W. Dobbie reported the result ol the conference of Orphans’ and Savage Clubs at Auckland, and at winch he had represented the Dunedin Club Tho programme submitted was an entertaining one. The club orchestra, under Bro. U. F. Davie, played four selections in admirable style; Bros. A Wnlmsley, J, Morris, F. M'Cullough, J. AngelJ, and S. G. Angell contributed songs; Bro. . J. L. uhite a recitation; Bro. H. 1C Davie a tenor horn solo; and Bro. D. W. Bews a piano solo. Tho proceedings tormina ted < with a farce, written by Bro. T. G. Grant, in which the author and Bros. Allan Young, W. G. Lloyd, C. H, Russell, and D. Gray took part. Jt depicted the troubles ol a Maori footballer, who, coining to an inn on the eve of an important match, was desirous of obtaining a good night’s rest. How his object" was defeated by the appearance of three successive ghosts was demonstrated in three hilarious scones, ono of which particularly not onlv “ brought down the house, 1 ' but some of the scenery as well. The title of the farce was not disclosed, but it was generally guessed to bo ‘Pi Kerry.’
