A FRENCH TRIAL CHARGE OF ESPIONAGE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. PARIS, July 19. The trial has opened of nine Communists for espionage. It is alleged that they circulated questionnaires among Communist workmen at the armament factories and aerodromes, and communicated information, to the Soviet Government.
The accused admit collecting information, but they declare that it was for the use of " the French Communist Party in connection with a scheme of industrialisation of the State services. The agent of the secret police gave cvidonceas to seeing one of the accused taking documents to the Russian Embassy. The defence alleges that the police adopted the methods of agents provocateurs. DEPUTIES ARRESTED. PARIS, July 18. The police visited tho offices of the Communist newspaper, ‘ Humanite,’ and asked whether the Deputies Cachin and Doriot were ready to give themselves up. The reply was in the affirraativ, and the deputies were arrested and driven to Santo Prison.
