ALLAH WILKIE SHAKESPEAREAN COMPANY

The. Allan Wilkie Shakespearean Com- ! pauy will commence its season at His ; Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday week I with a lavishly-staged production of | “Henry VIII.” The play involves , some of Shakespeare’s most master- ; fully delineated characters, the most j notable of whom is Cardinal Wolsey.. ! For the vivid individuality with which Ihe infuses the part of tho brilliant Wolsey, Mr Allan Wilkie has won the 1 heartiest plaudits of tho Australian , Press. Mr \Vilkie is said to bo quite , inimitable in his portrayal of the won- | derful cleric, both in his pride of power j and ultimately when surrounded by the i pathos of his downfall. As the beautiful Queen Katherine Miss Hunteri Watts is credited with presenting with exquisite artistry a character which, it is said, must rank, as tho triumph of Shakespeare’s genius and wisdom. Almost the whole interest of the play is centred upon Katherine and Wolsey—tho one the injured rival, the other the enemy of Anne Holeyn. Mr Fank Clcwlow, an experienced English actor who has lately joined tho company, is stated to represent the blustering, vulgar, and cruel Henry VIII. with convincing fidelity. Miss Minna Suckling, a talented English actress, appears as the fascinating Anne Boleyn with a degree of success which has been generously commended. The production is strikingly spectacular, the costumes of the Tudor period, and the sumptuous court scenes being most effective. A largo cast is involved, which was one, of the reasons why Mr Wilkie has greatly augmented his company. ‘ Henry VIII.’ will be presented for . three nights only, and will be followed jby 1 A 'Midsummer Night’s Dream,’ ! ‘ The Merchant of Venice,’ and ‘As Yon Like It’ in that order on the three succeeding days. There will be a matinee of ‘ A Midsummer Night’s Dream ’ on Wednesday, August 3. Box plans will open at the Bristol on ’Wednesday next, July 27.
