The totalisator at Gosford races operating on the recently-introduced regulation, showed some queer results. In one race, although the bookmakers’ quotation for the horse was 4 to 1, the totalisator investors only received their mojiey back, so although they backed the winner they did not win. The only ones who benefited were those who backed the favorite, which ran third. In the ordinary case they would have received less than their investment, but under the new rules they had to receive their money back. Altogether 344 tickets were issued 28G being on placed horses.
In another race tho first instance occurred of the totalisator not holding sufficient money to return to each backer tho amount of his original investment, 528 tickets equalling £132, being issued. When the regulation 12} per cent, bad been deducted £lls 10s remained for division, whereas £ll6 was required.
[A message received on May 14 stated: With a view to popularising the totalisator, the revenue from which lor some time has shown a decreasing tendency, the Government has framed new regulations, which will operate from May 23. The chief amendment is that whenever possible all dividends shall be calculated so as to ensure that each investor on a placed horse will receive a return of not less than thepiuit ol investment on which tho totalisator is operated. This will ensure that backers of placed horses will at least receive their money back. Another amendment deals with the number of dividends in a race, and provides thattbeie shall be two dividends if not fewer than four and not more than seven starters, and three dividends if eight or more starters. The ratio of division for a three-dividend race of the amount available for distribution is fixed at 50 per cent, for the first horse, <jo per cent, for the second, and 20 per cent, for the third horse. The ratio for one and two-dividend races remains unaltered.]
