DEATH BEFORE GAOL. SYDNEY, June 11., Nelson, or Harley, the Broken Hill murderer who buried the body of Ins mate near one of the water tanks in the Wilcannia district, was convicted after two trials, at the first of winch the jury disagreed. He was sentenced to death. While he was waiting for the, sentence to be carried out, he petitioned the Lang Labor Government not to reprieve him. However, his sentence was commuted to imprisonment for life, so that his case is almost an exact parallel to the one cabled. At Bathurst gaol last year, when a committee was inquiring, - several “lifers,” including Speechley, murderer of Constable Wolgast, said that they much preferred not to have had tjreir sentences commuted.
