PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING
This meeting was held last night, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr i. Anderson), Crs Lunn, Smith, Love, Campbell, Mackie, Sqollay, V illroott, Craigie, Bell, and Allan. CORRESPONDENCE. Miss M. Anderson, 'Hansford, asked for an extension 7 of the water mam to supply her residence.—Water, Committee to report. ' ■ , ' Mr C. M. Bonzoiii (railway engineer) advised that a deed costing £1 was being prepared to include all , water mains arid drains through railway property.— Received. The Town Clerk of wrote stating that his council could not; see its way to support a proposal regarding railway concessions for pupils attending the Technical College in Dunedin, because it might be prejudicial to their district high school.—-The Mayor said they could approach Mr Dickson, M.P., and ask his assistance, and that suggestion was approved. The District Telegraph Engineer replied to an inquiry regarding telephone toll fees, stating that this toll charge of 4d between Port Chalmers and Dunedin was at the minimum rate.—Cr Mackie thought it was a short-sighted view, as special circumstances might exist. In any case the subscribers had to pay Cash every month.—Letter referred to Expansion League. REPORTS. The Works Committee reported : During the past fortnight the foreman and staff have been engaged for the greater part of the time on .the patching of Beach street and George street, good progress having been made with this work, which is now almost completed. Further patching work will be carried out in Magnetic and Harrington streets, which are bad in places, particularly where the footpaths have been opened up when the new water services were laid. During the period under review all channels have been swept and mud tanks cleaned. In the matter of lighting, the committee recommends that the light on the band rotunda be lit every night until II o’clock, and that the present switch be placed lower down in a box and locked. With regard to the light on ijhe Sawyers Bay road, and two at Carey’s Bay, authorised some time ago, instructions are being given to have these installed. —The Chairman of the Committee, in moving the adoption of the report, stated that arrangements had been made for a light on the rotunda, and for the shifting of a light at Macandrew road. One light at Carey Bay was to be placed at the point at the slip, and the second light on the opposite point.—Cr Mackie thought the second light should be nearer Rocky Point.—The report, was adopted.
The Gas and Water Committee reported that everything is working satisfactorily at the gasworks. In the matter of the waterworks department, the foreman reports that the re-laying of the main in Bellevue place has been completed and tested. The balance of the Sin pipes left at the yard were burnt off and cleaned to complete this work. The re-laying of this_ main has been well worth while, as evidenced by the fact that the majority of the old pipes when lifted are so badly corroded as to be only fit for the scrap heap. In the matter of procuring stocks, a list has been furnished by the foreman, the greater part of which is made up of stocks required by the water department. The committee recommends that stocks also required by tho gas department be added, and that tenders bo. called for the complete list, covering water, gas, and works departments. —Cr Allan moved the adoption of the report, and suggested that a letter from a contractor in regard to laying water mains be taken in committee.— The report was adopted. The ..Finance Committee had no recommendation to make in regard to an application for permission to poison rabbits on the water reserves. The expenditure for the fortnight amounted to £3lO 19s 2d (general account) and £2B 2s 9d (gasworks account), the receipts being £2oo' (general account) and £54 16s 3d (gaSworks acount). — The report was adopted, and a formal motion carried fixing tho rates for the ensuing year at the same amounts as last year. GENERAL. On the mayor’s suggestion it was decided to ask that the penny-in-the-slot machines be erected in Port Chalmers for convenience of people wishing to use the telephone system. Cr Willmott thought that several trees which were unnecessary at the cemetery might be given to men out of work, who would no doubt be pleased to cut them down.—Referred to the Reserves Committee. The Mayor said the _ Harbor Board would remove an objectionable building at Carey Bay as soon as the council conld find another house for the tenant. Tho speaker’s colleague, he said, was the only member of the board who objected to the removal of the house. Nine applications were received for the position of caretaker of the Municipal Buildings and the Town Hall. The salary was £65 a year. Mrs A. M‘Donal’d was the successful applicant. The mayor was granted leave of absence for six weeks, as he was about to visit Auckland ■ and Sydney. Cr Scollay was appointed acting mayor during his absence. Cr Mackie suggested that three extra street lights ho erected at Carey Bay, and Cr Allan suggested that a sharp corner at Johnston’s building in King Edward square be rounded off.—Both suggestions were referred to ’committees. Tiie council then went into committee to consider a letter from Mr C. C. Timlin in regard to the number of men to be employed under a contract for cleaning water mains.,
