GENERAL SITE FOR POST OFFICE.

TO THE EDITOE. Sir, —I was pleased to see a corre-' spondent calling attention to the fact that the new Post Office site as proposed is not a central one. The Post Office should bo where the retail business centre is, and the old site is on the. fringe of this—not in the centre. The vicinity of Bond street is where the wholesale merchants are congregated, and will continue to be, on account of its handiness to the railway j yards and shipping; but the place where the public does its principal shopping is far north of this, and this is where the Post Office should bo for their convenience. Any observant eye will see that business of the retail nature is shifting northward. of which Stuart street and tho Octagon may be regarded as the centre. Therefore, to convenience the public the Post Office should be in this vicinity, not-on the outskirts, as at present proposed, and where it will bo more and more on the outskirts as the years go by. A huge mistake will be made if tho new Post Office is allowed to be erected on the proposed site in Princes street south, and the sooner the people wake up to this fact the more likelihood there is of such a blunder not being perpetrated. The convenience of the public at large is the first consideration. This is a matter which requires immediate attention to save future regrets, and I, along with your correspondent, trust the Otago Expansion League or some other representative body will take the matter in hand at once. Vested interests there will be to try to prevent a shift, hut these should be brushed aside without any ceremony, and the convenience of the public made the primary consideration. —I am, etc., Immediate Attention. Juno 17.
