The Otago delegates appointed by tho Otago Expansion League to attend the conference of South Island leagues at Christchurch on Tuesday of next week arc Mr S. 13. Macdonald, Mr E. Taniblyn, and Mr W. B. Steel. Tho first remit from our league is as follows:—“That the Government bo asked to assist in reinitiating tho prewar direct time-tablo steamer service between South Island ports and Aus--tralia, either by subsidy to tho Union Company or an increased grant for the carriage of mails. Should, the Union Company decline to reinitiate such service on tho plea that its vessels cannot bo profitably employed- therein, will legislative protection from hostile competition be given to any other vessels carrying or: tho trade.” Another Otago remit is as to including Dunedin ns a port of call for the Government finit steamer. Tho third remit from here advocates a policy of standardised reconstruction of main highways, and that a special loan therefore be a charge on tho revenue from tho petrol tax. The extension of afforestation operations is tho other subject, tho object being to relieve to some extent the unemployment trouble.
