.kaikorai m ’varsity a level PIRATES CLOSE UP The result of the match yesterday between ’Varsity A and ’Varsity B, in favor of the A team by 33 to 8, leaves the senior grade competition at a very interesting stage. Kaikorai and ’Varsity A each have 13 Hag points, Pirates conies next with 12 points, Ziimnri has 10 points, and Alhambra and ’Varsity B are close up. There are live more playing Saturdays, and the contest for supremacy among the leading teams will be an interesting one. Saturday of this week will bo the last of the first round, and the placing of the teams after the games, which include the meeting of the leaders, Kaikorai and ’Varsity A, should give a good idea of what the final result of the competition will be. _ The following table shows the relative positions of the teams in the senior grade competition ;

’VARSITY A V. 'VARSITY B WIN FOR THE A TEAM. The match between the ’Varsity A and B teams yesterday was not a groat exposition of football, but it was fast, open, and at times exciting. Oarisbrook was in good order, and there was an attendance of about 1,500 spectators. Though the B teani fought every inch of the way and did a share of attacking, it could not cope with the superior speed and combination of the A backs, who in the second spell showed some bright passing.The teams were:—

University A.—Muir, M'Clymont, Ross, Lindsay, Pacey, Mitchell, M'Lean, Douglas, Begg, Henley, Dunne, Porterfield, Christie, Martin, Morcto. University B.—Clouston, Byers, Bibhy, Oakey, Horsley, Potaka, V, Aitkcn, M’Cnllum, Caffel, J. Aitken, Grey, Batchelor, Wells, Crawshaw, Jolly. The backs of the A team attempted passing soon after the start, but very solid tackling brought them up promptly. The forwards contested matters strenuously for some minutes, and the B backs were sent away, Horsley kicking. Muir fielded well and cleared. The A forwards pressed, and from a scrum the backs raced away, but Ross was caught in possession. In the next attempt Pacey went past four or five opponents, but was tackled well by Clouston right on the line. The A’s persisted in back attacks, but Lindsay was pushed out near the corner. A minute later M'Clymont ran over to score, Dunne missing the kick. University A 3 University B 0 A good run by Oakey up the line put the B’s in an attacking position, and following a loose rush which broke the defence Caffel went over to score. Potaka converted. University B o University A 3

The game began to bo very evenly contested, each side attacking in turn. The B’s went within tho A twentylive as the result of a clever kick to touch by Potaka. The A forwards, who were not getting all their own way, took play upfiold, but within a few minutes the B’s were back again giving their opponents a trying time. Muir was caught in possession, and Potaka came up quickly to start some passing, which ended in Byers being caught by Ross just in time. A number of free kicks to the B team helped to keep play towards the A’s end of tho ground. A loose rush by the A’s had the B side in trouble, a force relieving. Another try came to the A’s when the backs were sent away and M'Clymont finished off the bout with a strong run by going over and round behind the posts. Mitchell goalcd. Univcrsoty A 8 University B o Putting more vigor into their play, tho A forwards asserted, aml_ alter several attempts by the backs Lindsay forced himself over at the corner. Lindsay’s kick failed. University A 11 University B 5 The B backs bad a number of good chances, but wild passing spoilt tho efforts. A kick by Moroto wont deep into B territory, but Byers, with Limisay right on him, fielded the ball well and cleared. The A forwards playing better together, tho backs got more chances, and from a good passing bout Mitchell wont over to score. He missed the kick. Half-time was called with the score:— University A i t University B t.. 5 There was a good deal of kicking early in tho second half, and then tho A backs got going. Many free kicks to the B team, however, brought up the attacks. The tackling of tho B team was still good when the A’s broke away. Eventually Pacey worked M'Clymont into position, and tho wing wont over and round behind tho posts. Mitchell converted. University A 10 University B 5 Morete charged down a free kick by the B team, but a B man picked up quickly, and from halfway started a passing bout which ended successfully. The ball went through half a dozen hands to Bibbv, who made a good run and threw to Oakey, the latter scoring at the corner. Potaka’s kick missed. University A .10 University B 8 Strong attacks by the A team had their opponents in trouble, and Lindsay was pulled down not far from the line. A series of scrummages took place near the line, but Grey dribbled through to clear. The A backs attempted to get going, but bad handling spoilt tho efforts. Ross kicked to find a “ hole,” and Lindsay, coming up quickly, picked up and ran over to score. Dunne’s kick missed. University A 23 University E 8 Another A passing rush among Mitchell, Pacey, Ross, ami M'Clymont, and the last named went over near tho corner. Mitchell’s kick hit the crossbar and rebounded into tho field. University A 23 University B 8 The A backs were away again after a great run by Pacey, hut a forward pass from M'Clymont stopped a sure try. Though the A team now, dominated back and and forward, the B team contested every inch of the way. Bibby made a good break-away through an A attack, but was caught in time. Another attack by the A’s

and M'Clymont ran before passing infield to Martin, who scored. Mitchell converted. University A 30 University B ... 8 The B backs were not tackling ns well as before, and M'Clymont, taking a pass from Mitchell, who had made a good opening, wont over to score.
