BRITISH PRODUCTION
DOROTHY GISH AS NELL GWYK
Originality in entertainment Ls something that is welcomed by everyone, in whatever shape or form it takes, and in films, where the ordinary programme picture is too often deadly unoriginal the introduction of something different is a relief to. the more critical picturegoer. Every now and then a picture that has originality in direction, in story, or in technical treatment lifts the art of picture entertainment out of the rut. Such a one is Herbert Wilcox’s film version of Marjorie Bowen’s ‘ Nell Gwyn,’ a life-story of ‘ Sweet Nell of Old Drury.’ This first National picture—a British production—which comes to the Octagon 'Theatre next week, is one of the best films turned out of an English studio. It has entertainment in every foot of its length: that is its greatest merit, since that Is what the public most appreciates. Furthermore, it is an example of just how perfect technique and experience can render a film. And.it is generously produced, .perfectly photographed, and brilliantlv acted. Tho Nell Gwvn of Dorothy Gish is perfectly delightful Her moods range from low comedy to high tragedy. She passes from one emo tion to another naturally and logically She makes Nell a living, vibrant per sonalitx.
