“COUSINS” ABROAD

CORRESPONDENCE AMONG SCHOOL CHILDREN SUGGESTION FROM ENGLAND A letter received by the Otago Education Board to-day stated that the Minister of Education had received from tho Director of Education, Leicester, England, a communication asking the co-operation of tho Empire educational authorities in bringing their children "into personal touch with their “cousins” iu tho Empire. It was proposed to achieve this by an interchange of letters between the school children. There was already a good deal of correspondence, and there could be no doubt as to the benefits derived from an educational point of view as well as from that of establishing friendly relations between our children and those in other countries. The Minister would be glad if some Now Zealand schools could be represented in the scheme, and tho board’s assistance was sought. The scheme of tho Leicester committee was that letters would bo written during school hours by the children in tbo elementary schools over nine years of ago as to “cousins” across tho seas. In each school the best letters—one from a boy and one from a girlin each hundred children or thereabouts would bo despatched to tho colonies chosen by tbo children, with the latter’s photographs, and any letters received iu return, with photos attached, would bo bound and circulated between school and school. Tho board decided to support tbo proposal.
