AEROPLANES HELP ADVANCE,
Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright,
SHANGHAI, June 8. A thirty-six hours’ battle against the Shantung troops on the border of Kiangsu and Shantung resulted in the Nationalists capturing Hanchwang and making their first entry into Shantung province. Owing to the superior strategy and morale of the Nationalists the Shantungese were doomed to defeat; but they put up a remarkable defence, behind strong fortifications until the Nationalists’ aeroplanes systematically' bombarded Hanchwang. . . A Shantnngese regiment mutinied, and upon this the commanding general surrounded most of tire mutineers,_ a large number of whom were shot immediately or fell beneath the executioners’ swords. Others fled panicstricken.—Sydney ‘ Sun ’ Cable.
