Dealing -with the high rate of taxation and the recurrent surpluses over his estimates, the Federal Treasurer (Dr Earle Page) said that the development of the timo-paymeut system in Australia was proceeding at an alarming rate. It was resulting in the prospective wealth of the community being pledged for goods, many of them foreign, at a rate which could not be forecasted. This; resulted in an everincreasing importation of such luxuries as motor cars, musical instruments, and similar goods.
