PROFESSOR OF DENTISTRY

CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT QUALIFICATIONS AND SALARY Tho University Council, at its meet-ing-yesterday afternoon, considered in committee a clause in the Medical and Finance Committee's' report which stated that the committee had adopted a report from a sub-committee regarding the appointment of a professor of dentistry. The report was adopted. SUB-COMMITTEE’S REPORT.

The sub-committee’s report read as follows

Consideration was given to a icncr from the Dental Association staling that the following resolutions had been passed by the Executive Council - • “The Executive Council of this association would urge on tho council of the University of Otago—(1) that thopos« tiou of the dean of the dental faculty bo advertised as vacant in England, British colonies,. and in _ two leading dental journals in tho United Hines, (2) that the position be a whole- - line one, with tho possible proviso of «r mission for research work, and that no private practice be permitted; Thai the salary bo a minimum ot £l,l'i(': f 4) that the new holder al Oh 1 position should be primarily a surge m deu list. Tho Executive .Council tins also suggested the appointment of a committee to inquire into ami report upon—(a) the duties of the p’tsent staff, (b) their hours of work, (c) their salaries, and (d) generally upon ibe training given in the Dental School.” In the opinion of the sub-committee, advertising should he confined to England and British dominions; it recommends that, in advertising, no roforonco should be made to research, otherwise that the recommendation of the Denial Association be approved; it recommends that the position bo advertised at £1,000; it recommends that no pronouncement of this kind should bo made in tho advertisement, but that, other things being equal, lire double fiualifcation should bo considered a recommendation. In the opinion of the nub-committee the present occasion of the retirement of Dr Pickcrill is pot an opportune time for investigation of the i>ast work of the Dental School, mid after tho new director has been appointed tho council will, in the ordinary course, consult him as to the organisation of the school and as to any changes which ho may deem necessary or desirable. With regard to any reorganisation, the council will to glad to receive any representations tram the Dental Association and to give due weight to them. It was resolved to meet represtdatives of tho Dental Association on -Til iff for tho purpose of discussing the foregoing report. At this conference the following resolutions were passed : (I) That previous recommendation 1 be adhered to (the representatives of the •association-concurred); (2) That previous resolution 2 ho adhered to (the representatives of tho association confiurrod). (:i) With regard to previous resolution 3, tho deputation stated that, in their opinion, £I.OOO would not attract a satisfactory man. - They pressed for £l,lOO, and stated that the professor in Melbourne receives a salary of £1.200. Tho deputation further slated that tho whole question would bo considered at a mooting of tho Dental Association in May, and asked that a decision on tho point should be postponed till after that meeting. Tbo sub-committee therefore recommends that consideration of <his matter bo bold ■ over pending receipt of report from meeting of the Dental As sociation. It recommends that lowing words bo added to previous resolution 4;—“Tho highest stress--.mid naturally be laid upon dcnl.il Tiia'oX cations and experience. tcae!; : i;g, mm practical,” In conclusion,'fire sub-ccmmif.eo expressed appreciation of the intocst taken by tho Dental Association in the welfare of the school, and thanked the deputation for their attendance.
