TEACHERS’ TRAINING
DANGERS OF MEW PAYMENT METHOD LIABILITY WILL ELIMINATE BEST STUDENTS rp B B United Pbesb Association.) WELLINGTON, May 17. . The New Zealand Educational Institute to-day made known its official views on the proposed change in the method of paying young teachers during their training period. “ There is the gravest reason to fear,” said the statement, “that if the new proposals are carried into effect the good qualities of intellect and character necessary will not be maintained. We fear that only those will enter the profession who are able to pay their own training (thus introducing an undesirable class distinction), or those who have been unable to secure admission into other services. The youths who this year are probationers will next year be students in the training colleges, either without pay, or subject to a long period of liability, which they have no assurance of being able to meet. The consequence is that they are already considering the advisability of withdrawing from the service.”
