FALSE INCOME TAX
FINE OF £2OO United Press Association.] WELLINGTON. May 18. Having admitted falsification of his income tax returns for four years ended March of last year, Horace Jas. Tapp, a fellmongcr. of Blenheim, was to-day fined a total of £2OO by Mr Page, S.M. Mr Tudhopc, for the Grown, said that the amounts wore small compared with recent cases, but the department wished it to he known that prosecutions were not confined to cases where there wore big discrepancies. For the period named the defendant returned his income as £1,502, whereas it was £5,317. The lax payable on tiro income returned was £l7, and on the true income £227. One of the objects of this prosecution was to discourage others adopting similar tactics. Mr Tudhopo stressed tiie powers of the department in regard to charging the tax evaded and the penal lax to correct any impression that fines were the end of the matter iu those cases.
