FINE FOR BETTING fPsa United Press Association.) D ANNE V HIKE, May 3. Two cases arising out qt a recent raid on tho promises occupied by Alfred Vivian Whitta at Christchurch appeared heiore Mr S. L. P. Free, S.M.. in Dannevirke to-day, when Percy John Barton admitted betting with Whitta on February 8. The police said that at a iVcent raid in Christchurch certain documents were seized by the police, amongst them being one which showed that defendant had a bet with a bookmaker. When interviewed by the police, defendant readily admitted it. Mr R. N. Blakiston, for accused, said that he was a blacksmith in a small way. He was a widower with eight children, and had made a bet, apparently with the idea of augmenting his income. He asked for a light penalty. The Magistrate said that he did not know any more risky way of adding to one’s income than by betting on horse races. Defendant was liable to a penalty of £IOO. Seeing that this was the first case in tho district, he would fine him £5 and costs (10s>. Kenneth Matheson. who was similarly charged, was fined a like amount.
