WINTER SHOW
A. AND P. SOCIETY Mr George Black, president, presided over a meeting of the executive of the A. and P. Society, held yesterday afternoon. Mr G. Greig (business agent of the New Zealand Railways) and Mr Cameron (sacretery of the Now Zealand Farmers’ Union) were also present. The Chairman.' explained that tho Railways Department, in conjunction with tho Agricultural Department, had arranged for two special trains conveying farmers from Otago and Southland to visit Lincoln Collego,_ Christchurch, and the executive considered that a similar consideration should be granted to tho northern farmers to visit the show.
After the matter bad been fully discussed it rvas decided that the society should co-operate with the department and the Fanners’ Union in .connection with arranging for a special train from Christchurch .or farmers desirous of visiting the Winter Show. Mr Greig undertook to discuss the question with the executive f the Farmers’ Union in Christchurch and advise the committee on the result. ft was suggested that the train should be run on Tuesday, May 31. arriving in Dunedin as early as possible. Sir John Roberts slated that be was pleased to see that the Railways Department was offering facilities -to farmers to visit other centres. He was sure many iarn.ers were deeply interested in the Winter Show, and no doubt a. large number would take the opportunity of visiting it if reasonable facilities were offered.
The meeting then dealt with several matters in connection with the show. When definite advice is received from the Railways Department in relercnce to the farmers’ train another meeting will be held to consider a complete programme for Show Week. It was decided that any alteration will not interfere with the annual conferences of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, the Otago'and Southland Sheep Owners’ Association, the South Island Dairy Association, and the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation, all of which have already arranged their dates for the conference.
The Space Committee has recently been busy allotting the numerous applications it has received. Its .chief difficulty is to give each exhibitor a, reasonable space so as to enable him to moke an effective display. In the meantime mist of the available space has been allotted, and until the, committee has some idea of what would be actually required for the display of all Ihe exhibits entered for competition it l as been compelled to bold over some applications for further consideration. In the fruit section all case classes will bo- judged on a oasis of commerdal standard, and all plate lots will be judged for exhibition purposes only. The department has adopted revised rules for the judging of all fruit, and these will be given effect to at the Wirier Show. The Hon. 0. .1- Hawken (Minister of Agriculture) has notified the society that he will ho pleased officially to open the Winter Show on Tuesday. May 31.
