Knight Bachelor, Sir Brundenell Whits (Commonwealth director of the Royal tour). Knight Commander of St. Michael and St. George, Senator John Newlands. Knight of the Victorian Order, Senator George Foster Pearce. Knights Bachelor.—Mr Wallace Bruace, Lord Mayor of Adelaide; Mr John Henry Butters, chairman of the Federal Capital Commission; and Mr Stephen Joseph Morcll, Lord Mayor of Melbourne.

WELLINGTON, May 9. Phe following message to the Prime Minister of Australia has been sent by Mr Coates, through Mr M'Leod, the New Zealand Government’s representative at Canberra:—“ The Government and people of New Zealand extend the warmest felicitations to their kinsfolk of Australia upon the inauguration of Canberra as the capital of the Commonwealth. The presence of their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of York is the happiest augury of the part Canberra will play in the future history of the nation. The wonderful progress and development achieved since the birth of Australia is a striking tribute io the industry and enterprise of her people, especially to taose who blazed the trail. The destinies of our two dominions under the Southern Cross will inevitably run side by side, and the people of New Zealand rejoice in this further indication of the strength and dignity of their nearest partner in the British family of nations. They are confident that the years to mine will mark still closer relations between our respective countries. We believe Canberra will prove the corner stone of a mighty nation a toner of strength to the British peoples ’’
