JUNIORS. Technical Old Boys B 8, University D 4. Albany Old Boys B 6, University 0 1. G GRADE. High School A 10, Albany Old Boys CO. NOTES ON FIRST DAY'S PLAY [By Circle.] The surprise of the opening day was the substantial defeat of University A by Technical Old Boys. Undoubtedly tho Blues were below the standard shown by them over many years, but the Old Boys were right after it from the start. Good luck to them. They have the speed, youth, and fitness to make a very fine team if only they would practice a less selfish style. By that I mean revert to finer tactics; short, nippy pass, accurate placing, and no bullocking. It is far easier to play the game by clever passing and deterious wrist work than by “banging the wood Jn ” and sending the leather about without precision. _ Hinton appears to have improved in style and tactics. Johnson was as last and keen as ever. Jcny is the promise of a very fine half before this season closes. He plays a heady and accurate game. Edson was the outstanding feature of a team whose defence was not equal to the tireless efforts of a keen set of forwards. . Fleet was the strong point of a comparatively weak, and in the sense of skilful hockey, uneducated team, but his efforts were neutralised by some splendid passing work by City forwards. , , , Albany and Training ollege, the two new contestnnis for senior grade honors this season, met on No. 3 ground. Tho former won comfortably by 6-0. Both teams require coaching in the finer points of the game. Although Albany won substantially, there was nothing really skilful in their style or tactics. All, of course, are young whom experience will develop. There is some very good material in this team. Almost tho same remarks apply to Training College, whom it gives us special pleasure to see entering senior ranks. There appears to be plenty of enthusiasm behind this club, who entered second grade last season and second and senior this year. May they long .continue to develop. I am pleased to see tho keenness and vest which govern the wearers of tho Red and Black. Albany has the support of keen vice-presidents, too, and an able coach—Mr Dey—who is, by the way, father of two members of tlie club, lleniiick skippers the club and senior eleven. He wanders from his position too much. Tho half-back, Russell, a, third grade player last season, though diminutive, is a great sticker. Simpson and Kilpatrick crowd each other a Generally speaking, the form of the teams all round this season does not impress one greatly; but, of course, it is rather early yot to judge tho standard of play.
