CHORAL SOCIETY

* *

The series of articles on Mendolsahoi that have appeared in the ‘ Star ’ will be greatly enhanced by the rendering of Mendolsshon’s oratorio, * St. Paul. ■While Mendelsshon, in the writing of his oratorios was greatly influenced by Bach and Handel, yet they contain much that was new and favored the romantic school of thought which was then in existence. ‘ St. Paul,-’ no doubt, is based on Sebastian _ Oach’f | Passion of.St. Matthew.’ This work is not a mere copy of the earlier master, for its spirit is thoroughly modern, and shows everywhere the characteristics of the composer. The Dunedin Choral Society will present this oratorio, ‘ St. Paul,’ on Thursday and Friday, the 19th and 20th ”inst., at His Majesty’s Theatre.
