DRUNKENNESS.^
A first offender for drunkenness was fined 20s, in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. “ DISGRACEFUL LANGUAGE.”
Stephen Michael Scoles pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness and with using obscene language in Haig street, Mornington. The Senior-sergeant stated that accused went to his mother-in-law’s house last evening and created a disturbance, smashing a good deal 'of crockery. The police were sent for, and accused was' removed from the house. While waiting for the car accused made use of some disgraceful language. Senior-sergeant Quartermain explained that accused had a number cf young children, but owing to his drinking habits ,the family were freautvr.'y neglected. On the charge of drunkenness licensed was fined 16s, in default fortyeight hours’ imprisonment. On tin second charge a fine of £2, in default seven days’ imprisonment, was imposed, Accused being allowed a week in which to find the monw. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
A young man, whose name was suppressed, was charged with attempting to commit suicide on March 20. Accused pleaded guilty, and Seniorsergeant Quartermain said that he was a salesman, and as far as was known bad never been in trouble before. He. had been in financial difficulties. This affected him to such an extent that he had used a pea rifle on himself in an endeavor to commit suicide.
The Probation Officer (Mr J. Garbutt) said that a lady friend of the family had offered to take the accused under her care, and this, the Probation Officer thought, .would be satisfactory. The Magistrate (to the senior-ser-geant) : It is some time since the accused had this impulse; he is not likely to do such a thing again? The Senior-sergeant: I don’t' think so. ,
The accused was convicted and ordered to como up for sentence if called upon.
