FORBURY TROTS

CLOSE FINISHES AND FAIR TIME As to weather, the first day of the Forbury Trotting Club’s races started as it began- -told wind and fine overhead—so that no one sot of horses had the worst or the best of the hick in that respect. The attendance seemed to be about the average for a non-holiday, and the totalisator handled £425 more than on the first day of the 1925 meeting. The following completes our report ST. CLAIR HANDICAP (Harness), 3‘iOsovs; second 60, third 30. CJnhoppled trotters only. 2m. 2—Mr W. T. Lowe’s Trampfast (Logan Pointer Galindo mare), scr (Owner) 1 6 Mr J. C. Richore and Desert Star lay handy in the early stages Logan Hanlon, never far away, turned second into the straight, and, stalling oft Ariki, won by three-quar-ters of a length, Conara a length further back. Time, 3min 52 3-ssec. FLYING HANDICAP (Harness), 300sovs; second 50, third 25. Im. 1— Mr J. M'Lean’s Logan Holme (Logan Pointer Golden Lily), scr (Owner) ... I 2Mr R. Some Wilkes and Desborough were next. Time, 2min IGseo.

NOTES OK THE RAGING £By St. CtAiE.] The weather was fine, but the winter sun was tempered with a very cold westerly wind, which made the climatic conditions rather unpleasant for the opening day of the Winter Meeting. The course had dried up splendidly and was in first-class condition. The attendance was good for the opening day, and the totalisator investments, £24,92SJ, though £15,119 below last year’s total, when the meeting was held on the last two days of the Exhibition, were £452 better than the 1923 meeting figures. The racing was interesting, and most of the finislies close, reflecting credit upon the veteran hnndicapper Mr Brinkman’s work. Southland horses opened the meeting well, Kcrswood Bell and Nelson M'Elwyn winning well, each returning good prices. The former was protested against for galloping past the post, but she only broke a couple of strides from the post, and the stewards rightly dismissed the objection. Author Jinks put up an attractive performance in beating a "ood field in the mile saddle race in the good time of 2min Msec. . Another Southlander in Great Bell won well in the Innovation Handicap, registering her fourth consecutive win, and was the first favorite to get home. The Wiuton-bred Native Chief should have won the Prince of Wales Handicap, but was not driven judiciously, and after leading into the straight was beaten in the run home by another ex-Sonthlander, Queen’s Own, who did not have to go nearly her handicap time. _ Tr a rap fast made a runaway victory in the St. Clair Handicap, and the Central Otago trained Logan Hanlon scored well in the Renown Handicap, in which Desert Star was made a hot favorite, and though well placed throughout was not good enough. Logan Holme concluded an excellent day’s sport by winning the Flying Handicap, and sent followers of first favorites home in a good mood. Mr Dunne’s starting was good, and the programme finished sharp on time. * * * * Arctotis, who was receutly sold by Mr J. Hamilton, of Winton. to Messrs J. and C. Small for 600 gs, was selected as a good thing for tho opening event, the Bayfield Handicap, for unhoppled trotters. Ho carried nearly twice as many investments ns Peter Boy, with

Nourmahal, Hawkesbury s Pride, and Jock’ Bingen, all evenly backed, next in demand. . There was a lot of breaking and skipping amongst the limit horses, and when the field had gone two furlongs Wee Hatch, Genevieve, Jock Bingen (who also skipped at the start), and Kerrwood Bell were out in front. Just after passing the stand both Genevieve and Jock Bingen broke, and Kerrwood Bell and Katuke then took charge and led Nourmahal and Hawkesbury Rride into the last lap. Halt a mile from home Nourmahal made a forward move, and! when just on the tail of the leaders he broke. Katuke led Kerrwood Bell by two lengths round the far turn and into the straight. Hie Otautau-trained mare gradually overhauled Katuke, and 20yds from the post was almost on terms. In the last few strides Kerrwood Bell skipped, and before Walsh could get he back on to her feet they hair passed the post, the judge declaring a head verdict in favor of Kerrwood Bell Merry Peter was twenty lengths off third,_ followed at long . intervals by Jock Bingen, Nourmahal,' and Hawkesbury Pride. Times: 3mi.i 53 3-ssec, drain 49 4-sseo, 3mm 52 l-ssec. Investments, £1,754.

The three-year-old filly Asset was baeKed down to a very short price in the Domain Handicap, witli the bouthlaudcrs, Slump and Nelson AL'Llwyn, next in demand, none or the others being heavily supported. Asset was quickly on her met, and led Robert Bell, Slump, and iNeedles over the hrst circuit. Then the leaders were Asset (on the rails), with Kooert Bell at her wheel, Stockade Junior, and Slump. There was little change in the next round, and entering tne last Jap Asset was just in front or .Robert Bell, with (slump: and Nelson M'iillwyn close up. Going along the back Wenio moved up, and biump dropped back. At the turn into, .the straignt Asset was just clear, but at, the distance post Asset, Weiilo, Robert Bell, and Nelson f.PKhvyn were running in line. The favorite was the first beaten, and in a great run to the post the Gore-owned Nelson M'Klwyn gained a head victory from Wenio, with Robert Bell another head away third. After them came Asset, Slump, and Leo Bingen. Times: 3min 48 4-ssec, 3min 48sec, 3min 50 l-ssec. Investments, £2,961*. ; * * * *

There was a lot of messing at the start, arid’Avalanche and the favorite at once drew right away from the others, and bkd the it'icc to themselves. Avalanche showed Great Bell round to two and a-half furlongs from homo. Then the latter ran up, and, leading into the straight, stayed on to win by half a length. Randolph was over twenty lengths away third, followed by Tamerlane, Merry Peter, and Katute. The winner has now started four times this season for four wins, and is a very evenly gaited trotter.. Pete Peter next. Times': 4min 44 o-uscc, 4min 44 4 foec, 4min 39 2-ssee. Investments, £3,1184.

Desert Star was sent out a very warm favorite for the Renown Handicap, carrying nearly twice as many investments on ..his chance as another Invercargill-trained horse in Lingfield, with the bracketed pair, Rollicking Bells and-Jolly Pet, and Conaranext best fancied.- Okoura and Kibiringi got the wheels of’their sulkies locked at the start, and interfered with Lingfield and Carbine Direct. Spring Note went away the smartest of the limit horses, and led Richore, Desert Star, and Logan Hanlon for a round. Then Spring Note and Richore ' led .
