LOCAL AND GENERAL

The annual meeting of the St. John Ambulance Ladies’ Sewing Guild was held in the association's rooms, the Octagon, on Monday afternoon, Mrs 6. M. Baker occupying the chair. The following office-bearers ware elected: — President. Mrs G. M. Baker; vice-presi-dents—Mesdames J. J. Clark; R. W. Glendinning, and H. E. Shaddock; committee—Mrs Beaumont, Mrs Moreton, and Miss Healey; secretary and treasurer, Miss B. M‘Nab. The objects of the guild are to provide suitable clothing for indigent attended by the St. John Ambulance district nurses, and generally to further the aims of the St. John Ambulance Association in its work among the poorer classes. Before commencing the ordinary business the Rev. V. G. Bryan King, chairman of the parent body, addressed the meeting. He pointed out the excellent work done by the guild in the past, and emphasised the fact that, with the growth of population arid the unfortunate prevalence of unemployment, the need for its ; work was now greater than ever. The war against sickness, poverty, and distress was one in which there was no dischaarge ; Mr King’s remarks were enthusiastically received by the large number of . ladies present, and there seems every prospect of tho guild enjoying a pleasant, if hard-work-ing session.

The Caver sham Literary Club held its first meeting for the year on Saturday evening. The subject, 1 Impromptu Speeches,’ was, as is peculiarly a feature in such cases, of a highly diverting nature, even serious subjects being invested with humor by reason of the uncertainty of treatment and the inflexible time limit. Tho meeting was well attended, and the club is looking forward to a prosperous season. The North Dunedin Boy Scouts, assisted by Mohicans and Rovers, assembled at Logan Park to the number of seventy on Saturday, _ and collected spare wood and chips suitable for firewood and conveyed them in handcarts to a number of liomes in the north end whose aged ir mates will benefit considerably in warmth and comfort by the kindly action of the hoys. Tho contractors for the demolition of the Exhibition Buildings had given permission to the Scouts to collect the wood, considerable quantities of which are lying about the ground, ar.d the young fellows were not long in gathering sufficient to fill ten handcarts and twentyfive bags. The Rev. G. E. Moreton (Scout, chaplain) and tho North Dunedin Scoutmaster assisted and directed the boys, and the Ladies’ Committee of the North Dunedin Scouts, with Mrs Cornish, provided afternoon tea for them.

Mr H, E. Holland, Leader of-the Opposition, addressed a large audience at Taumarunui on Saturday night in the Theatre Royal. He dealt mainly with the land policy, the timber industry, and dairy control. So far as timber was concerned, he said, the Labor Party advocated a revenue-producing tariff, and would not permit imported timber to drive our own off the market. Of some 10,000 timber workers in the dominion 2,000 were only partly employed. Foreign timber, he added, was being brought to the dominion from Sweden at a cost which was less than the railage from Ohnkune to ’Wellington.
