TAIERI RIVER TRUST

The monthly meeting of the Taien River Trust was attended by Messrs R. T. Sadd (chairman), W. Wyllie,F. Johnstone, W. Blackie, C. F. Evans, and A. Moore. The Foreman reported that the following work had been done for_ the month:—West Taieri gang had finished Momona drain, repaired breaks and leaks in contour bank; at present were cleaning Upper Leo Creek. Maungatua gang had cleaned drain from pump to Lee Creek, then to Momona and Maungatua road. He recommended the following work for tho ensuing month;—West Taieri gang—Wyllie’s Creek diverson and Patrick’s drains; Maungatua gang—Poplar and Wain’s drains. Tho banks and boxes have been attended to.

The report was adopted. W. Millar, Tokoiti (Milton), wrote explaining that the depth of water in C drain, and Kirk’s drains made it impossible for him to undertake the cleaning.—The Clerk explained that he had arranged with Mr Taylor to carry out the work at the contract price.— Action approved, Mr'Millar’s deposit to be returned to him.

F. S. Dyer, Silverstream Dairy Factory, asked permission to lay pipe for drainage purposes from his Outram factory to the river through the trust’s bank.—Granted, subject to engineer’s approval, and a Sin pipe recommended. The Assistant Engineer, Public Works Department, Allanton, notified the price submitted by the city electrical engineer to be charged for power in connection with the pumping plant at Gibson’s box. He recommended the trust to confine pumping to nighttime, and so procure a cheaper rate.—Approved. W. J. Trestrain wrote re formation of a drainage boards’ association. A meeting of board representatives would be held at Wellington on the 20th inst.—Received. J. Marshall drew attention to the rabbit and gorse nuisance on certain properties. Thistles had been cut where he thought necessary. On _ the inside of some steep banks .the thistles acted as a protection, and kept cattle off the bank.—The clerk was instructed to write to the owners calling attention to rabbits and gorse near embankment, and asking for steps to clear gorse. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, in reply to the trust’s letter forwarding a petition by W. Costello and others, stated that the work being carried out by that department on the trust’s behalf was considered to ho in the best interests of the plain as a whole, and the trust vps quite within its rights in having such work undertaken. To accede to the request of the petitioners would render ineffective the whole of the expenditure in connection with the scheme, which was intended for the protection of the western side of the plain.—Received. It was resolved that the balancesheet of the trust for the year ending March 31, 1926, ,be approved, finally settled, and signed by the chairman, and that the balance-sheet bo deposited at the trust’s office, Mosgiel, for inspection by all persons interested.

Inspector reported having examined the Berwick boxes, hut he had found very little sign of leakage, and he suggested an inspection when the river was lower.—Agreed to. Gravel in Contour Channel at Millar’s.—lt was decided to cart gravel from the contour channel and deposit it at a convenient place for the Taieri County Council. The inspector was instructed to Strengthen -the contour embankment in all weak places. D. Gray’s tender at 6s 6d j cr chaui was accepted for certain woiks.
