A REJECTED PORTRAIT
MR COLLIER'S PLAINT BERNARD SHAW SURPRISED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, April 26. The Hon. John Collier ; referring to the Royal Academy's. rejection of his portrait of Mr Bernard Shaw, said: “ Words fail me. It is only the second rejection I have had in fifty years. I have no quarrel with the Academy, but I think I have been harshly treated. I consider tho portrait beater than that of Mr Aklous Huxley, the only other one I submitted this year, which was accepted. In fact, Mr Shaw’s portrait is my best. I gave Mr Shaw a quizzical, humorous expression. Ho gave me seven sittings. I intend to exhibit it elsewhere.”
Mr Shaw, interviewed, said; “I am surprised, like everyone else. There is nothing wrong with the portrait, or Mr Collier, or me. It is for the Academy to explain the discrimination, which must he against tho sitter, if tho Academy thinks that tho public is utterly tired of portraits of mo, then I agree. 1 am delighted to yield my placo to Mr Huxley.”
