TERRITORIAL NOTES

[By Skirmisher.] An error appeared in my notes last week which calls for correction. . I wrote announcing that No. 1 section, A Company, 2nd Cadet Battalion (0.R.) had won the Stoneham Cup competition. When my notes appeared in print this paragraph had inadvertently been altered to read that the cup had been won by No. 1 section, A Company, Cadet Battalion being second.

In connection with the recent inspection of Cadet companies competing in the Campbell statuette competition, advice has been received that the inspection of representative companies in the Southern Command has now been completed, and that B Company, 2nd Cadet : Battalion (O.R), has tied with the Invercargill Company for second place in this command. A company of Nelson Cadets proved the winners, and besides being chosen as the Southern Command representatives, who will subsequently compete against representative companies chosen from the Northern and Central Commands, this company has . been awarded the Passmore Shield. Ibis shield is held annually by the company chosen to represent tho Southern Command in the final competition for tho Campbell Statuette. Tho officers and non-commissioned officers of B Company, 2nd Cadet Battalion (0.R.), under Captain J. M. Samson, Company Commander, are attending weekly classes of instruction at the Kensington Drill Hall, with a view to preparing for the work of tho coming training year. Encouraged by having come so near to representing the Southern Command in tho above competition, Captain Samson is determined to make every effort to bring his company out on top next year. His officers and non-commissioned officers are working well together, and are attending classes regularly. In spite of the most inclement weather the parade of Territorials and Cadets ou Anzac Day was a most'creditable one. All units were well represented. and tho short ceremony carried out at the Queen’s Gardens was an extremely impressive one. Sergeantmajor Napier and his Bugle Band sounded tire ‘ Last Post ’ and the 4 Reveille,’ and the firing party selected from the Boys’ High School Cadets fired volleys. The Artillery and First Battalion Otago Regiment Bands, the Boys’ High School Bugle Band, and the Dunedin Pipe Band each took a turn in playing the troops to the Queen’s Gardens. As the route followed was a comparatively short one, there was, at one stage, an overlapping of music, which made it extremely difficult for the troops to march in strict time. There was an excellent turnout of returned soldiers, headed by Mr A. C. Laing, president of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association. Tho memorial service afterwards held in the Kensington Drill Hall was attended by a very large assemblage of tho general public, and had it been a fine day it is doubtful if that spacious hall would have been large enough. This service was also most impressive, arid' the stirring address delivered by the Rev. Erin Evans,. 0.F., will long be remembered by all who heard it. The ‘Funeral March ’ was rendered by the Raikorai Band, and the hymns, which were led by the. Returned Soldiers’ Choir, were played by, .the St. Kilda Band. Ser-geant-major. Napier, assisted by two of hjs drummers, sounded the ‘LastPost’ and 1 Reveille ’ as he alone can sound them. ■ The Girl Guides and Boy Scouts were well represented at the. service. • All training for the. year 1926-27 is now completed, and the preliminary medical examination and handing in of Cadet uniforms by those passing into the Territorials, commences next Monday night, and will ,bo carried on throughout the, week. The following Monday the final medical examination will commence, f.. understand that it is to •bo very, stringent. this year As soon as this examination is completed the work of posting will bo undertaken and all units will be in readiness to commence 1927-28 training on June 1.
