CLAIM FOR DAMAGES
BARNETT’S CASE,

Barnett admitted to-day that he sold his house at Bournemouth before he approached William Coward and Co. regarding the Nelson appointment. Mr Justice M'Cardie pointed out that he had previously said that he sold the house to take the promised post, and it was therefore a falsehood. Barnett apologised, saying that it was a mistake.
[Alleging that he was improperly induced to make the voyage to New Zealand, William Edward Bennett, gas engineer, is suing William Coward and Co, for damhages. He gave evidence that Messrs Coward and' Co., acting as agents, offered him a five years’ contract with the Nelson City Council,,at a salary of £6OO and emoluments of £20(1 Bennett sailed with his wife and Tour children, and found no vacancy.
