(Received April 28, at 9.35,- a.m.) Israel Melcher, aged fifty-four, was charged at the Old Bailey with attempting to blackmail Harold Rubin, a wealthy pearl dealer and prospective Conservative candidate for Wednesbury. The evidence showed (that Rubin’s father acquired a fortune from the Western Australian pearl trade. He sent Melcher to Shark’s Bay, buying pearls. Melcher said that he Jived there for seven lonely years, .then his health broke down.

The prosecution alleged that Melcher threatened to disclose that Rubin was paying secret commissions, and thus ruin Rubin’s political career. It was also alleged that Melcher retained papers appertaining to Rubin’s' business. Rubin denied all the allegations. The case was adjourned. !
