CHINESE ATROCITIES.

TO TEE EDITOR. Sir, —What many of your renders, along with myself, wisho to know is whether or not you believe your sources of information as to what is at present occurring in, China to be any more trusted than*those sources which in 1914-18 fed ns—l refused to take tho nutriment—on “ corpse factory,” _ “breast cuttings,” and “ mutilation 'of children” legends, or which later gave us “ nationalisation of women,” etc., “ad oaptandnm vulgus,” re Soviet Russia P Or are wo again to be told—after the holo-caust-—by “some one in the know,” that, “well, alter all, it was excellent propaganda ’’ ? Already I notice wo have had the British Consul done to death, later exported, wounded, and still later only robbed or looted. 1 am beginning to think there must be a lot of “static” about. But it seems curiously queer that it should, in so many instances, work out to the discredit of our Celestial brothers. I am afraid that if it he not speedily scon to it will succeed in raising an unreasoning hatred of the Chinese who are now dwelling in our midst, for there is no use of shutting our eyes to tho fact, that in our midst there are many individuals capable of reason or analysis. A sample of the kind of mind possessed by these dangerous individuals is seen in the silly and contemptible letter appearing in last evening’s paper, purporting to be an answer, criticism, or comment on my letter of the evening before. 1 am leaving it to your honor not to cut my letter, as the previous one was, for had you not done so the chances are my criticism would have had more point.—l am, etc., John* Gilchrist. April 9. [We publish the letter in all its beauty.—Ed. E.S.]
