GIBRALTAR TRAGEDY: OFFICER SHOT DEAD. LONDON, April 7.—Colonel J. Fitzgerald, commanding the Second Battalion of East Surreys, at Gibraltar, paid his usual afternoon visit to the orderly room, accompanied hy the adjutant. • The Jailer, on leaving, noticed Lieutenant Duffield, and asked him why lie was there. Duffield said that he wished to see the colonel, and the adjutant obtained permission for him to do so. Duffield entered, and presently idiots wore heard, anti the colonel was 1 omul shot in the head. He said: “He shot mo. Arrest him.” Colonel Fitzgerald died almost immediately. Duffield, who admitted his guilt, was arrested, and placed in a mental ward, dl is understood that lie was suffering from delusions. Tho officers say that lie hud .no ill feeling towards the colonel, who recently, complimented Duffield bn his good worn. 5 HAMMERLEY FINED £3. The charge of liclmvim-; in a disorderly manner preferred against John Frederick Hammerley was concluded this afternoon in defendant’s absence, lie hav.ng again failed to put in an appearance when the. ca-e was called.
