In spile of the facts that the existing free rone at Barcelona has never yet been filled to capacity and its average revenue totals only about 70.000 pesetas per annum, the municipal authorities have decided to furnish: the funds required—estimated* at over 20,0 million pesetas—for the construction of a large and up-to-date free port there. MOTOR SHIP . ADVANTAGES. A sum of at least £B,OOO can be * saved annually by using- a motor ship of 5,000 tons register instead of a steamer of similar tonnage. This statement was made by Mr E. T. Bartlett, Newcastle manager of the Adelaide Steamship Company, in showing a party of shipping men over the motor ship Mombo recently. The company has largo interests in mines on the northern coalfields, yet it -finds it-much, more economical to run motor ships than steamers. It has two motor ships in commission, and another, the Minapa, was recently launched, and will he used in the Spencer Gulf passenger and mail service, In run between Adelaide and Port Lincoln. Mr Bartlett pointed out to the party the cleanness of the engine room, the economy in time in getting Under weigh, ' the maintenance of an even speed of 13J knots throughout the journey, instead ol having to slacken speed every four hours with stoameis to allow ol the 11 res being renewed and ashes raked out, and the great advantage of electrical winches as compared with the clattering steam winches on steamers. - It was stated Unit Messrs J. and A,Brown, the well-known coal owners, have.a motor collier building in England; that the North Coast Company is about to put motor ships of 20 knots o.i the Sydney la Byron Bay run, and that Burns. Philp. and Co. aro about to purchase a second motor ship toi the' Island trade. The oil consumption of the motor is about seven tons or nude oil per day, as compared with 800 tons of coal, for a steamer over a similar period. . The crew of the Momho numbers only thirty, compared with forty-two on a steamer, the saving being in tiremen, trimmers, and greasers, the normal complement of which is eighteen on a steamer and only four motormeu on a motor ship.
