NATURALISTS’ FIELD CLUB

OPENING OF 1927 SEASON Favored with a beautiful day, there was a splendid turnout of members or Saturday for the opening of the Natu rahsts’, Feld Club. The party took the bus from Duke street to Glonleith, anc from there proceeded via the Ross Creel bush track to Pineapple Point. Geologj was tho chosen study, and the partj was under the able leadership of Mr H Tily, the club’s geologist. Nichol’i Creek \ftis the objective. Before de scending from the head of the spur t( the bed of the crok the features of the adjacent country were described am diagrams distributed showing the vela tions of the surface features to the un derlying rock formations. Tho descem was then made to the bed of the,stream and those features previously shown ir diagram examined in situation. First the phonolite dyke was noted filling ii the site of a fault, and then, as progres; was made downstream, the variqu strata were observed in turn standing on end and leaning against the dyke the order being sandstone, marl, green sand, sandstone, and finally igneoui rocks. Time and the difficulties of th< route did not permit of the party reach ing the point at which the flexure tool place from a horizontal to a vertica position, but the evidence already gainec was quite sufficient to show that such : distribution had taken place. Tin leader of the party acknowledges his in debtgdness to Professor Benson for mosi of the information given during thi day. INDOOR MEETING The indoor meeting hold on Honda; evening was also very well attended and thirteen new members were elected The study in geology was continued, am Mr H. Tily gave a most interesting ad dress on ‘ Major Movements of th< Earth’s Crust.’
