Three charges of unlawfully using an instrument on March 3 and April 9, 1925, and Juno 8, 1926, were preferred against Hannah Matilda Dalton, aged fifty-four, in the Police Court, Auckland. After evidence had been heard accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supremo Court for trial. James Julian East was brought before justices of the peace at Waipukurau charged with having, while clerk to the Waipawa Hospital Board, received from Jeffery Hill £IOO, and with having fraudulently omitted to account for the money. He was remanded to appear before the Magistrate’s Court on April 8. Bail was granted, self £3OO, and two sureties of £l5O each, accused to report to the police daily. Building in Palmerston North during tho past year touched the Highest point in tho history of the town, the value of construction eclipsing the record established in 1925-26. For the twelve months ended yesterday permits to tho value of £329,760 were issued, including 200 for houses. Ho then dealt with tho negotiations by Governor Grey, under which the Natives handed over 214,000 acres, of which the Government retained 50,000, and then purchased a considerable area at 3s an aero at a time when private speculators were paying £4 an acre. Counsel contended that that was unjust, and, further, that, many loyal Natives had not had their ancestral rights in their lands restored to them, Tho Taranaki, district fire brigade demonstration was held at Stratford yesterday. Tho monthly executive meeting of the .Roslyn nltd Knikorai Ratepayers’ Association was hold on Thursday evening, Air P. I<. Ritchie (president) in the chair. A long.by consideration was held by members on the City Council's estimates, as submitted to the association. for works to he proceeded with in tho district during the year just dosed. The secretiny was instructed tp write thanking the City Conned for the consistent manner in which the scheduled works had been carried out. Throe big works were, however, still in the minds of this association—tho widening ol the three main thoroughfares—the Knikorai Valley road as far as the mill, the West Taieri road as fains Wakari, and Ilighgate. The council was congratulated on facing the problem of widening the latter when land had to be bought, with the, addition of reconstruction and after that part was sufficiently dealt with this association would urge tho other two works being put in hand. The forthcoming council elections rvero reviewed, and hopes were expressed that representation in the council should bo attained. Should any resident .stand for a sent in tho council in the interests of tho district support from Ihe association would bo forthcoming. If tho other ratepayers' i ssoeiations around the citv declared a candidate tor their respective districts the support of the association could bo assured.
