The Governor-General (Sir Charles Forgusson) arrived at Ashburton yesterday afternoon on his first official visit to the district. He was presented with an address of welcome on behalf of the borough and the county. Last evening he attended a Masonic function, and to-day he will visit several places* in the county, including the Methven Show.

The Rev, W. L. Marsh has accepted a call to the Devonport (Auckland) Presbyterian Church. Mr T. M'Crorie and his wife were farewelled on the Dunedin -Ailway station this morning as they started for the north to join a liner to take passage for England. They will probably bo away a couple of summers. Mr A. Ecstieux, with his wife and daughter left this morning for a trip to the Old Country via Sydney. Mr (J. F. Russell was a passenger for Wellington by the second express to-day. After forty-two years' worries with the Justice Department, Mr E. W. Cave, Registrar of the Supreme Court and Official Assignee at Dunedin, is to-day retiring. He intends to leave shortly on a trip to Great Britain.

Mr W. Spence, district manager of the Government Life Insurance Department at Dunedin, is transferred to Christchurch, and went *way this morning. Mr W. A. Gatheridge (Chas. Begg and Co.) bado good-bye to Dunedin this morning, and left for Wellington, to which "ity ho is transferred. He will be missed ■n musical circles. From Auckland comes the announcement of the death of Mr John Mills, brother of Sir James Mills therefore son of Mr William Mills, who came to New Zealand in 1842, settling in Wellington, and was for many years Collector of Customs .it Dunedin Mr John Mills served in the same department, and became collector at West, port, then at Auckland; hut he retired twenty years ago, on account of ill-health, and bad been an invalid for a long time, though he reiched fhe age of cghty-two years At the monthly-meeting of the members o? the Moray Place Congregational CKursn last evening the resignation of the Rev W. Saunders was laid on the table. After such a long period of service, for it is over thirty-seven years since Mr Saunders and his family came to the manse, it must come as a very great break, both foe the minister and the church, which he has served with such conspicuous fidelity. His very life has become so interwoven with its people that Moray Place without its present minister will seem almost, unthinkable to many people. It is, however, after very careful consideration that Mr Saunders has been led to take this step, and, although he is yet virile and Miows no signs of slackening, bn foals that he has come to an age when the best interests of the church will be served by his giving way to a younger man. It will be some little time yet before the resignation can be given effect to, for Mr Saunders has graciously placed his services ns the disposal of the- church until such limn so a successor can be appointed. At the annual meeting of the Otago branch of the Victoria League in the Town Hall yesterday afiernoon the mayor (Mr H. L. Tapley M.P.), who presided, made reference to the death during the past year of Mrs Thcomin, who was one of the vice-presi-dents of the. league. He was sure that her dentil had been" a loss to (he community, end particularly to the Victoria League and the Pluukot Society. A silver medal lias been granted by the Royal Humane Society to Constable Wilfred Alex. Lean, of Gisborne, for rescuing n prisoner from drowning at Napier on November 24.—Press Association.

Miss Kathleen Miller, New Zealand ladies’ 220yds and 440yds champion, and her mother, Mrs A. M. Miller, returned to Dunedin by the second express last night after a successful tour of the dominion. They were met at the railway station by representatives of the Kiwi Swimming Club, and later were entertained at simper at the Ritz A London cable states that Mr -W. Robinson, a director of the Anglo-Continental Produce Company, and chairman of the New Zealand Dairy Produce Importers’ .Association, has been elected ohahman of the London Provision Exchange. The following appointments have been made by the Otago Education Board;—Mr James Nelson, to head master, Green Island; Mr W. J. M’Dowall, sole teacher, Papatowai; Miss I. C. Macplierson, sole teacher, flia Ora; Miss V. M. Kihblewhito, assistant, Waikoikoi. The latest guests at the Excelsior Hotel include Messrs T. Pope (Hamburg), R. Powell (Queenstown), L. Schofield and T. Poarcy (Christchurch), W. R. Waters (Alexandra), Mr and Mrs Bain (Wanganui), Mr D. Murray (Ranfurly), Mr D. M’Laren and Mr H I; ncnce iPatcnroa), and Mr A. Goodwin (Wellington).
