RAILWAYS MAGAZINE The March issue of the ‘ New Zealand Railways Magazine ’ introduces a new feature. It contains the first of a series of letters from a London correspondent, who is referred to as “one of the best known Horae writers on railway and allied topics.” This initial article deals chiefly with the grouping of the British railway concerns when they were returned from Government to private control after the was. Among items of interest in progressive departures in New Zealand railway administration, space is devoted to the opening of a hostel in Wellington for railway cadets, so that those not having nomes in that city may live there during their four months at the training school attached to the Railwavs Head Office—far more desirable for'lads of fifteen to seventeen years of age than the cheap boarding houses of Wellington. The appointment of Mr E. F. S. Grant as organiser of instruction in ambulance work on railways is also dealt with. In the Railway Board's official outline of its policy mention h made of the means being taken to create new passenger traffic to offset the inroads of motor car and bus competition, which a comparison of this year’s and last year’s traffic and revenue returns shows to lie very considerable, particularly in respect of short distance bookings. In the Otago district notes mention is made of the progress of reorganisation work at Hillside Workshops, and of the success of tho Ngapnra and Tokarahi motor bus service in North Otago, acquired from private ownership by the department and run in substitution for the train. Mr Spidy explains the use of the Gnatb chart in his latest article on ‘ Production Engineering,’ and then* is a very appreciative tribute to the work of the late Mr A. K. Harris, in the position , of general superintendent of transportation.
