RED CROSS SOCIETY

The monthly meeting of the Red Cross Society, held on Monday afternoon, was presided over by the president, the Rev. V. G. Bryan King. In the course of a letter of appreciation K Captain Jean Decoux, of the Cassiopee, wrote: “I thank you for all the kindness always granted to the Aldebaran and Cassiopee, and I shall always remember the cordiality with , which I was received at the Montecillo Soldiers’ Home. Please convey ray beet remembrances to all members.” A soldier patient who had for sonic time been an inmate at the Montecillo Home wrote; “I much appreciate all I that the society has done for mo, and ' cannot speak too highly of the many I acts of kindness received from the | matron and president and members of | the committee.” An ex-soldier in hospital also ex- ' pressed by letter his best thanks for the kindness and consideration of members of the Red Cross. Reports from the Red Cross nurses for Taranaki and Canterbury show that the work is well under way for the now year. Classes are being formed in nen centres. At New Plymouth a good : deal of relief is carried nut. A circle j has been formed at the Women’s Club i in New Plymouth with the object of ! assisting tho Red Cross nurse in her work. I Headquarters, Wellington, forwarded i a copy of a communication re the Direc-tor-General of Health proposing the' utilisation of the services of the Red Cross nurse in tho Taranaki district. - Resolved that the matter bo left to headquarters to deal with. Headquarters also forwarded a copy of a letter from tho Mayor of Wei lington in reference to the establishment of a free ismbulance service.— On tho motion of Mr Rosevear, seconded by Miss Rattray, it was decided to reply thxt this centre feels ! that the matter is <\utsido tho jurisdic- j tion of the society. j Advice was received that war craves | films had been forwaxded to Christ- J church, whence they would ho dospatched for screening in Dunedin. j The secretary was instructed to write 1 to.the Invercargill Red Cross regarding a Southland ex-soldier who had been in hospital for a long period. Mrs Roberts reported that the Visiting Committee was still keeping m touch with the patients in the Dunedin and Wakari Hospitals. The men were very glad of tho comforts supplied, and always anticipated visiting day.

The matron at Montecillo furnished a< satisfactory report. A number of gifts had been received for tho benefit of tho soldier patients, who wero very grateful. Miss Graham, for the .Home Committee, said that tho visit of His Royal Highness the Duke of York to the home provided an interesting and happy occasion, There was a good muster of patients and_ os-patients, the latter gladly attending on invitation from the society. The Rev. Bryan King said that His Royal Highness created a most favorable impression in conversing with the patients, members of committee, and staff. The Duke was much impressed by the environs of the home, and the provision made for the comfort of the patients. The function was a very lumpy one, and undoubtedly one of the most successful ever held at. the home. A satisfactory financial statement was submitted.
